The Col. Bob Bowman Memorial Chapter of Veterans For Peace (VFP Chapter 136 – Central Florida) will be stationed in the Breezeway/Courtyard of the Volusia County Historic Courthouse in DeLand from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Monday, June 8th, 2015 for their annual Day of Remembrance for the Men of the USS Liberty.
Literature from IfAmericansKnew.org and DVD copies of “Blood in the Water” (a compilation DVD including the documentaries The Loss of Liberty and the BBC’s Dead in the Water) regarding the deadly Israeli attack of June 8, 1967 on the USS Liberty will be available free to the public. There will also be signature gathering for a petition calling on the U.S. Congress to officially declare June 8th of each year as USS Liberty Remembrance Day.
The crew of the USS Liberty is the most decorated crew since World War II and among the most decorated for a single engagement in the entire history of the United States Navy. Virtually unarmed, the American navy ship was attacked by Israeli planes and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967 leaving 34 US Sailors and Marines dead and 174 more wounded. Yet, the attack has never received a full investigation, as required by law.
If you are not yet familiar with the deliberate Israeli attack on the USS Liberty, please visit the USS Liberty Memorial website maintained by USS Liberty survivors Jim Ennes and Joe Meadors and read about the findings of the Independent Commission of Inquiry and formal war crimes complaint filed by the USS Liberty Veterans Association with the Secretary of Defense. Also visit Friends of the Liberty, a website run by an association of friends, supporters, and Liberty family members that honors the men who perished in the attack. They list the following video resources to provide important background and understanding about the attack.
- The Day Israel Attacked America – Al Jazeera America (2014)
- USS Liberty: Dead In The Water – BBC Documentary (2002)
- USS Liberty Cover Up – “The Loss Of Liberty” – Discovery Channel & History Channel
Let’s call on Congress to investigate the June 8, 1967 Israeli attack on the USS Liberty and officially designate the 8th of June of each year as “USS Liberty Remembrance Day”.
